It also encompasses the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Several small islands in the Alboran Sea are also Spanish territory. The mainland of Spain is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea except for a small land boundary with Gibraltar; to the north and northeast by France, Andorra and the Bay of Biscay; and to the west and northwest by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean.
Although the Spanish economy was adversely affected by the economic downturn in 2008, its strong tourism industry kept the country afloat during this time. In addition, Spain has increased its exports and decreased its important, which in turn had a positive effect on economic growth. Furthermore, in the 2012-13 edition of the Global Competitiveness Report, Spain was listed tenth in the world in terms of having a good infrastructural system. As well as having the second-largest tourist industry in the world, Spain is also the second largest car manufacturer in Europe after Germany, generating 8.7% of the country’s GDP in 2016.
