Slovakia is a developed, high-income economy. It became a member of the EU in 2004, and adopted the Euro in 2009. The majority of employees in Slovakia (69%) work in the services industry, owing to considerable growth within the tourism sector. Car production is also a striving industry in Slovakia, with large investments from well-recognised companies including Volkswagen, Peugeot and Kia Motors. Contractors are increasingly seeking work in the growing sectors of electronics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and information technology.
Conditions such as 19% flat tax rate for both business and individuals, no dividend taxes and a convenient geographical location has led to the attraction of foreign investors, mainly in manufacturing, banking and insurance sectors. However, given that Slovakia ranks 22nd in the EU in terms of innovation (according to the European Commission), the World Bank has recommended improvements both to information infrastructure and to the education system
