Italy’s New Digital Nomad Visa Debuts

Photo Alt Tag

Remote work has become increasingly popular in recent years. With it, we have seen an increase in the number of workers pursuing their careers remotely as Digital Nomads.

What is a digital nomad? Digital nomads are professionals who often work remotely from different countries and locations.

Until this year, Digital Nomads could not legally work in Italy for the long term. On March 28, 2022, a new visa designed for remote workers was signed into law. This new law became effective on April 4 2024.

Who is eligible for this visa?

The Italian digital nomad visa is managed under Article 27 of the Italian immigration code, targeting highly skilled workers. According to the Italian government, a digital nomad is defined as a non-EU citizen "who carries out a highly qualified work activity with the use of technological tools capable of allowing them to work remotely, both as a worker self-employed or as a collaborator or employee of a company even if not resident in Italy." The criteria for being considered a 'highly skilled worker' was unclear when proposed in 2022. Still, there is now more clarity, and the definition has evolved. There are many criteria for eligibility, including:

  • Proof that the applicant has no criminal record within the last five years.
  • The applicant can prove they have a minimum annual income of €28,000.
  • A valid health insurance policy that will cover the applicant for the duration of their stay in Italy.
  • Proof of employment from an organisation based outside of Italy. Those who are freelance or self-employed contractors must provide the necessary evidence of their employment structure.
  • The applicant must show evidence of at least six months of experience in remote work and the capability to sustain remote work.
  • Documentation that outlines and shows proof of the applicant's accommodation for the duration of their stay in Italy.

How long is the visa valid for?

The digital nomad visa is valid for one year. The applicant can renew this annually once they comply with and fulfil the visa requirements. Digital Nomads must visit the police headquarters in their region to apply for a permesso di soggiorno, otherwise known as a residence permit, within eight days of their arrival. Additionally, it is essential to remember that if one wishes to bring family, although permitted, the local police headquarters have a say on whether a residence permit can be issued to the relevant family members.

Tax considerations:

The digital nomad visa applicants must ensure tax compliance before issuing their application. Failure to comply with the relevant legislation may negatively impact one's application. To best ensure compliance, make sure you speak with taxation experts prior to issuing your application. Our team at 3C Global are experts in European tax compliance and can help you ensure you comply with the relevant tax laws.
